Technique is “a way of carrying out a particular task, especially the execution or performance of an artistic work or a scientific procedure.” (Oxford Languages definition)
In short, “technique” is the mechanics of drumming: how we hold the sticks, the different ways to hit the drum, how each kind of stroke is defined.
One word you will hear me say a lot is “defined”. Defining the details of everything we do separates the amateurs from the pros. The attention to detail. On your TV, High Definition gives us the best clarity. Clear definition in our approach to drumming does the same, gives us clarity.
Now, its important to note that all of us are different. Our hands are different sizes and shapes. Our fingers are different. The musculature of the body is slightly different in every person. The musical styles we play are different. Our technique has to be modified to fit our bodies - and our goals - according to certain underlying principles. I've spent a lifetime learning and applying those principles.
